Classified Ads to Find a Job
I personally feel that using the classifieds to find a job (unless for entry level or low wage positions) is a waste of time. When you utilize the classifieds exclusively to find a job you are limiting yourself to at best only 10 percent of the open positions out there. On top of that you are competing with thousands upon thousands of other job seekers who are seeing and applying to the same exact ad you are. Also as I touched upon before the overwhelming majority of the positions are ads for lower wage positions. You want to use every tool available to you so you don't want to disregard classified ads all together. But do not rely on them to heavily and realize that they are more effective to find entry level or lower wage positions.
Classified ads are more likely to lead to entry level or administrative positions other then VP's position. The great thing about classified ads is that it is fairly easy and quick to review advertisements for jobs. Don't waste your time and money on the daily paper. You should check your local paper on Sunday and also the paper for the largest metropolitan area near you. It is also worth a shot to check out the national papers like the Wall Street Journal.
You may also get some very valuable job search intelligence by reading classified ads for positions that don't match your qualifications. If you see an ad that states "because of our explosive growth in the New York area we are hiring for XXXX." now you know that this company is in a hiring phase and it may be worth contacting them directly.
Here is a little trick that I learned in my sales career that works great for your job search. Many classified ads list only a fax number and no other contact information. Sometimes not even a company name. In most organizations the fax number is an extension of there main telephone number. If the fax number is 631-333-6789 there is a pretty good chance that the company's main number is 631-333-6000 or 631-333-6700. By having that number you can contact the company directly and find out the right person in charge of hiring that position and send them your resume and cover letter directly. You can then follow up on your information directly. This tactic will also separate you from all the other applicants who just faxed in the info.
