Using Classified Ads to Advertise Your Business
Every community has one. And odds are you've used them at least once before. Classified advertisements have evolved to become the single biggest source of exchange for many used goods within a community.
You too can use classifieds to get rid of your old junk. Remember, one person's trash is another person's treasure. But there are several things you can do to make your use of the medium worthwhile.
1. Draw the ad scanners eye as best you can. While there are probably hundreds of potential buyers out there, there are also hundreds of other sellers. Give the reader a reason to hesitate on your ad. And then make them want more information.
2. Give your ad the best chance by giving it the best outlet. Newspaper ads and Craigslist listings are great unless you have something very specific or unusual to sell. For example, it may be easy to get rid of puppies or kittens through a general ad. Snakes and lizards may be a little more difficult. Fortunately, there are niche publications for just such audiences.
3. Give it away as much as possible. Free stuff draws a crowd, whether you are selling in the real world or through the use of classifieds. Offer samples and you will get callers.
If you can, allow potential buyers to leave their information with a voice mail or answering machine. This gives them the security of not having to deal with an overeager salesperson. It gives you the security of knowing that whatever the customer buys, it is because they really want it.
4. Be the solution your customers want to see. Whether you are selling a cleaning service or a dog house, your ad should make it clear that you are there to be the solution to the customer's problems. Don't pull your punches. And give the buyer a reason to call you over the other guys.
This is just a starting point. Surf around and you will find how much wisdom there is to bear on the subject of classified selling. It isn't an art form as such, but there is a method to making your ad stand out. Don't be afraid to do a little reading before you jump in.
