Classified Ads - A Small Part of the Job Search

 Classified ads are only one way to find a job. In today's economy a job search usually begins with classified advertisements. Though classified ads have expanded to include classified sites on the internet, only twenty percent of all jobs filled each day in the United States are found from a classified advertisement.

To find the job of your dreams a job seeker must dig a little further and ask more questions. To begin a job search the applicant should first tell everyone they know and come in contact with that they are looking for a job and what kind of job they are looking to find. People to contact should include family and friends, people from church including clergy, people you see everyday, former co-workers and salesmen or with anyone you happen to have a conversation.

 Another helpful tip is to go through all address and past contact lists and contact everyone and tell I'm looking to change jobs. This can easily be done in an upbeat manner without the sound of desperation. The more contacts made the more positive job exposures are made. The more exposures a person makes the more jobs they learn about.

It is still more "who you know than what you know when trying to find a job." A University of Dayton Department Head, when asked about hiring stated, "I don't even put ads in the newspaper.

 It is too expensive to run an ad." Many business owners don't list advertisements because of the cost, inconvenience and time involved. Most jobs are truly undiscovered gems just waiting for someone. Another method often forgotten when searching for a job is to contact your school's alumni association and placement office.

 Not only do colleges have alumni and placement offices many high schools offer these services through their guidance department. While you can find a job in a classified advertisement you have a better chance of finding a job today through someone you know.
